The Buffalo Soldiers's story is still yet to be toldBy Paul FigueroaThis book is fine as an overview of the Buffalo Soldiers's service during the Spanish American War; as well as the Campaign to capture Pancho Villa and the First World War. But after reading the book; I am still left with the feeling that the Buffalo Soldiers's story remains untold. Most of the book covers the American Campaign in Cuba and at times; I thought I was reading a biography of Theodore Roosevelt or a story about the Rough Riders. The author; Jerome Tuccille; spent more attention profiling the white commanders of that war; such as Theodore Roosevelt; General Joseph Wheeler (a former Confederate Cavalry Commander) and John Pershing; than on any of the Buffalo Soldiers. In fact; the one Buffalo Soldier that he did profile in some detail; Corporal David Fagen; turns out to be a turncoat who went over to the side of the Filipino insurgents. And finally; I was disappointed that the author did not even address the controversial decision Pershing made of detaching the Buffalo Soldiers of the First World War and placing them under the command of the French Army. Tuccille mentions it; but that's all. Of course; Pershing would not detach white soldiers and place them under foreign control but did so with his black soldiers. Tuccille provides cover for Pershing by excusing his racial attitudes as being political in nature to please his President; Woodrow Wilson. But the decision to cut off the black soldiers appears to be due to Pershing's own racial animus towards his black soldiers.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Doesn't get to deep into any one person. I ...By John WilliamsDoesn't get to deep into any one person. I came away wondering where would we be as a society if black folks had been given a fair shot at the American Dream many fought to defend.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
