Winston Churchill called them "twice a citizen" -- the military Reservists. This account of their contribution in the Korean War is written from a citizen/sailor viewpoint. Reserve fighter squadron VF-871 from Naval Air Station Oakland; California; is followed from the author's call to active duty in July 1950 and his preparation and service in Korea aboard the aircraft carrier Princeton; to his release to inactive duty in September 1951. Cooper candidly evaluates the squadron's performance based on the quality and depth of training and notes the continuing drama surrounding the 38th Parallel. "A formal peace treaty has never been signed and the two sides remain technically at war. The beat goes on."

I am not disappointed! I am learning to read Russian and - if I live long enough; to speak it some. This book; and others; provides a context for the language. I think it is important to understand why a language - even one's own; is the way it is. This book gives me further appreciation for a people and a country that I would not otherwise be able to know about since I was born and raised in a different country.8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. What they dont know we dont knowBy snogardfognikThis book is amazing. It points out some of the seemingly biggest and smallest Russian cultural concepts that Americans; just do not come across in our daily lives. My wife is studying Russian language; and she lent the book to her native-speaking Russian teacher; because her teacher wanted a better understanding of what Americans did not know about Russian culture. Everyone that I know that has read this book believes it is the best instruction on why Russians are Russians.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
