Tomi Reichental's idyllic childhood in rural Slovakia was cut short at the age of nine in October 1944 when he was rounded up by the Gestapo after his country's government was taken over by Fascists. Along with twelve other members of his family he was taken to a detention camp where the elusive Nazi War Criminal Alois Brunner had the power of life and death. Tomi lost thirty-five members of his family in the Holocaust; and gives his account of being imprisoned as a child at Belsen concentration camp; as well as the post-war scramble to find a new home and a career. His story is a story of the past. It is also an important story for our times. With black white plates.

WHITEWASHED; SOMEWHATBy Rod NewmanThis saga tells the story of one of the more interesting Confederate naval officers and the only Confederate ship to circumnavigate the globe. But Captain Waddell is a somewhat more controversial character than this book would have us believe. Despite being an excellent seaman; fair-minded and compassionate; he did make curious decisions which receive no mention in this book - whitewashed away; like his inability to recognize a Yankee ship which; as it turned out; belonged to the family of his attractive prisoner; Lillias Nichols. And why were his memoirs altered in relation to Mrs. Nichols before publication in 1960? Why was he accused of theft by Master's Mate Cornelius Hunt following the cruise; and make no response? These and many other mysteries receive no mention in this book. They have; however; been explained in another recent publication; "The Last Confederate Ship" at Sea by Paul Williams which reveals certain unseemly facts - a love affair and blackmail which resulted in the circumnavigation. But; despite the whitewash; "The Sea King" is an interesting read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
