DOC The Shattering of the Union: America in the 1850s (The American Crisis Series: Books on the Civil War Era) by Eric H. Walther in History

Description

The American Indian Wars; the most famous of which were fought on the great Western plains between 1860 and 1890; were among the most tragic of all conflicts ever fought. To the victor went no less than the complete domination of the continent; to the loser total extinction. Accustomed only to small scale skirmishing and raiding; the Indians were doomed from the start. They had never fought a European-style war with its constant pressure and co-ordinated strategies. Philip Katcher details the armies of both sides; paying particular attention to their organization and uniforms.

I enjoyed the clarity with which the author presented these events. There are also photos of many of the personalities mentioned which was helpful to me.I also appreciated the many other works and publications listed in the endnotes of each chapter.I believe this is a history that can be enjoyed by the layperson. I found it fascinating and recommend it as eye-opening history.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great College BookBy Raul G MartinezThis was a great book.
