The South in the NorthBy Jon HuntFor many years I had heard of the St. Albans Raid; but not until I read Michelle Arnosky Sherburne's wonderful account did I get a full appreciation of what happened. Some twenty-one Confederate men descended upon St. Albans; Vermont on October 19; 1864. Within a half hour they had robbed three of the town's banks; murdered one man; terrorized the inhabitants and rode off to Canada with monies stolen from the banks. Led by Confederate Bennett H. Young; some of the group were captured. This raised a big problem for the United States government. They requested extradition but the Canadians refused. A trial was had; and the men being found not guilty; were freed. The Confederates were again arrested and a second trial rendered the same verdict. The book goes into some riveting detail about international relations at the time and also how Vermonters rose to the occasion to prevent further raids. "The St. Albans Raid" is a powerful read and a great addition to understanding the fringes of the Civil War. I highly recommend it.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. More like reading the encyclopediaBy audrey warkAn overly detailed and accurate history of a surprising event during civil war that probably no one knew about from their school or college history classes. Nothing was left out. Not an article was missed. Very repetitious. More like reading the encyclopedia.
