The Story the Soldiers Wouldn't Tell: Sex in the Civil War

ebooks The Story the Soldiers Wouldn't Tell: Sex in the Civil War by Thomas P. Lowry in History

Description

Essential background to the German blitzkrieg of World War II Complements the stories of panzer aces like Otto Carius and Michael Wittmann In the wake of World War I; the German army lay in ruins--defeated in the war; sundered by domestic upheaval; and punished by the Treaty of Versailles. A mere twenty years later; Germany possessed one of the finest military machines in the world; capable of launching a stunning blitzkrieg attack against Poland in 1939. Well-known military historian Robert M. Citino shows how Germany accomplished this astonishing reversal and developed the doctrine; tactics; and technologies that its military would use to devastating effect in World War II.

Sex and the Civil War... putting a human face on the conflictBy SteveThrough carefully crafted narrative; Dr. Thomas Lowry brings to light both the ribald and the seamier side of the Civil War. His meticulous research renders to the reader a mélange of the humorous; the ardent; the passionate; the sordid; the repulsive; and the violent accounts of man's most basic drive. It is a tale that puts a definitely more human face on a war that has been highly romanticized and is steeped in legends of chivalrous behavior and gentlemanly conduct; legends that; although bearing some truth; veil the truths about the conflict and life during those times. This compendium of facts; letters; and deductions will leave the reader amused; astonished; and reviled all at once. It is an excellent read; but one certainly not for the squeamish or faint of heart. I highly recommend this book to any student of the American Civil War.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Pleasantly SurprisedBy Michael PetersonI wasn't sure what I was getting into when I purchased this book. I'm interested in the Civil War--not so much the famous battles--but the everyday details that most people take for granted (or don't find interesting). At first I thought this book would be a dry; cumbersome treastie that only a sociologist would love. I was completely wrong! The author--a clinical MD--presents this overlooked information in a witty and comical way. Although prostitution and homosexuality have been around for thousands of years; this book tells the stories that most people can understand. Not only is the information easy to digest without technical jargon to slow down the average reader; it offers a glimpse of real army "recreation" (both officers and enlisted) that strips away all of the heroic deeds and over inflated myths and presents the common soldier with all of his foiables.I found this book to be entertaining as well as enlightening and I highly recommend it to anyone; even if you're not a Civil War buff.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
