audiobook The Unfinished Nation: A Concise History of the American People by Alan Brinkley in History

Description

The Back of the Yards neighborhood; located in back of the Union Stockyards and composed of Packingtown; Town of Lake; and New City; was the setting of Upton Sinclair’s classic 1906 novel; The Jungle. Permeated by an unforgettable smell; Back of the Yards was a melting pot of immigrants; many who worked in the stockyards. In 1894; Mary McDowell started the University of Chicago Settlement House in Back of the Yards. She improved living conditions and in 1905 helped create Davis Square Park. The Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council was founded in 1939 by Joseph Meegan; Saul Alinsky; and Bishop Bernard Sheil and is America’s oldest notforprofit communitybased organization. It consisted of 185 delegate organizations involving residents; business owners; churches; parks; schools; and social clubs that worked to advocate improvements. The council motto continues on as “We the people will work out our own destiny.” Relive the bustling activity and the lives of the people in the neighborhood through the historic images in Back of the Yards.

American history is actually a pretty complicated and sometimes a not so pretty picture when you dig into the details and conflicts among politicians; countries (America; England; France; Spain); movements; and institutions. The Unfinished Nation does a very good job of telling the reader how everything transpired. After you read this; you will probably feel that we are lucky to have come through all of this to be the nation we are today.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Son says it is interestingBy Shasta1962My 19 year old son loves history and had to purchase this for his first history class in college. When I asked if he wanted to resell it he said no because it was an interesting read! He said the book was way better than the history class because the teacher didn't know half about what she was trying to teach (her specialty and passion was another time and place - so why was she teaching US History to 1865?) and no one else in the class liked history - it was just something they did to jump through a hoop in their education. It got to the point where the teacher would ask a question and he was the only one who would raise his hand. Then the teacher would say - does anyone know besides "....".Now if my son could only find a career connected to history - using his knowledge other than teaching (which he is NOT interested in)0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
