Unlike Swager's other books that are geared toward younger audiences (which I applaud); this book is written for a more mature audience. It gives a general overview of the Revolutionary War in the South before focusing on the events after Nathanael Greene abandoned his focus on Lord Cornwallis and returned to South Carolina to push the British out of the uplands. The work details General Greene's challenges and his resultant decisions and maneuvers. The work's focal point is the pivotal Battle of Eutaw Springs which is often overlooked and/or misunderstood by students of the Revolutionary War. Swager produces strong arguments on the battle's importance and offers insights on several disputed points; including who should be considered the victor. Although most Americans associate the Revolutionary War with the New England and Middle states; Swager demonstrates the importance of the South in the patriots' struggle for freedom. If you wish to learn about this aspect of the war; I highly recommend this short work as a good starting point.7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Finally; Marion was part of a Great Victory at Eutaw Springs!By Kat58History has long recorded that the battle between the British and American forces at Eutaw Springs; near present day Eutawville; SC; was either a victory for the British or a draw. But clearly; the facts put forth in this book show that the Americans won the day at Eutaw Springs. Christine Swager has once again brought history back to life. This is a book full of details; drawings; maps and more.
