In the history of a war we find; generally; but little reference to the manufactories engaged in the preparation of material; they had been previously established; and were in active operation before its commencement; their products being immediately available for active operations. An instance can scarcely be found in modern warfare where previous preparations had not been made; and where the necessary manufacturing works did not already exist. The late war was entered upon unexpectedly. Throughout the Southern country it was supposed that the North would not seriously oppose a secession of the States from the Federal compact; hence no previous provision had been made for such contingency; and no material of war gathered.

An Eye Opening View of People Living in Economic PovertyBy Harriet HicksI specified economic poverty; because it is clear that these people hold a wealth of creativity and spirit. I would not know how to network to make it to a job on time; if my car broke down. In my culture; you can only ask favors a few times; and then people may not take your calls; because they are busy with their own lives. We are raised not to impose on our friends. The working poor find ways to balance out these needs; so they help each other. I need a ride to work today;but you may need a babysitter for your night shift job. They reach out and cooperate for mutual survival.I really enjoyed the stories used to illustrate the chapters. Jesus knew the value of a good story to help us hear a lesson. The parables are examples that come to mind.I would recommend this book for individuals and for groups. It is well structured to promote thoughtful review; and to discuss in classes; without being too "preachy".1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book challenged me to think about poverty and the blessings that come when you have less. You have to be more creative. You have to be more flexible and more open minded. It also taught me about wealth and about things that I take for granted. For example; a $2.98 cup of coffee. For what I spend; I could keep a newborn from getting HIV. It brought perspective and humbled me. Worth a read. It's not what I expected; and it's an amazing look at what society tends to over-look when it comes to less financially wealthy people. It's generally a quick read; but it has LOTS of good information inside! If you can afford to get this book; please do! (Also get a couple copies for your friends and family!)
