Gay New York brilliantly shatters the myth that before the 1960s gay life existed only in the closet; where gay men were isolated; invisible; and self-hating. Based on years of research and access to a rich trove of diaries; legal records; and other unpublished documents; this book is a fascinating portrait of a gay world that is not supposed to have existed.

He is bold enough to question the gap between the dogma dispensed by the leaders of the religious right wing leaders of the Evangelic Movement and teachings of Jesus found in the Bible. He identifies the sources of many of these differences. He demonstrates the "selective " use of inerrant Biblical interpretation. He calls for a life of following Jesus as opposed to a life of following religious / political leaders.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. You want the truth? A Breath of Fresh AirBy HotNanaFor several years now; my husband and I have felt alone and out of sync with our evangelical brothers and sisters. Randall Balmer has given voice to our feelings and frustrations. I can now take comfort in the hope that others like us are out there-concerned with Jesus's concern for the poor and not the Pharisees. May our tribe increase!
