DOC To Carl Schmitt: Letters and Reflections (Insurrections: Critical Studies in Religion; Politics; and Culture) by Jacob Taubes in History

Description

A major new work in modern Tibetan history; this book follows the evolution of Tibetan Buddhism's trülku (reincarnation) tradition from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries; along with the Emperor of China's efforts to control its development. By illuminating the political aspects of the trülku institution; Schwieger shapes a broader history of the relationship between the Dalai Lama and the Emperor of China; as well as a richer understanding of the Qing Dynasty as an Inner Asian empire; the modern fate of the Mongols; and current Sino-Tibetan relations. Unlike other pre-twentieth-century Tibetan histories; this volume rejects hagiographic texts in favor of diplomatic; legal; and social sources held in the private; monastic; and bureaucratic archives of old Tibet. This approach draws a unique portrait of Tibet's rule by reincarnation while shading in peripheral tensions in the Himalayas; eastern Tibet; and China. Its perspective fully captures the extent to which the emperors of China controlled the institution of the Dalai Lamas; making a groundbreaking contribution to the past and present history of East Asia.

Short introduction explicates political theology thoroughlyBy Clint SchneklothIf you've been wanting to read a concise introduction to political theology and why it matters; the introduction to this volume by Mike Grimshaw is outstanding. It really clarifies some essential questions that many political theologians reference but rarely explicate; such as why "the exception" matters in political theology (it is the secularized version of a miracle) and why the sovereignty of the state and the sovereignty of God are transformed in a post-Christian context. It also goes straight at the central issue for all of us; the intrinsic anti-Semitism not just of Weimar Germany; but of perhaps Christianity as a whole; and therefore everything secular which is still Christian in its post-Christianness. Readers will want to also read Taubes's other work on Paul; and read Carl Schmitt's work; but this volume is an outstanding supplement and summary. For the record; and for a future edition; there are a LOT of typos in the introduction.3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Arch-Jew and (obligatory) Anti-Semite: BFFsBy Rowan G. TepperAn extraordinarily pleasant and engaging read. Jacob Taubes explains his frenemy-relationship with Carl Schmitt. This book sheds new light upon the problematics of the (Hegelian-Kojèvean) End of History; of political theology vis-a-vis an occidental eschatology of counter-revolution latent in Schmitt's work and thought. Taubes recounts several profoundly fascinating anecdotes which shed new light on figures such as Alexandre Kojève; Walter Benjamin Heidegger; Taubes' recollections also bring to light certain connections between Schmitt; Orthodox Judaism and the Rise of the American Academic right - and on the constitution of the Israeli state.Taubes; the Radical Arch-Jew; and Schmitt; the Reactionary Anti-Semite: BFFs in a silent dialogue.
