The focus of Letters of War is letters written by Marines and Corpsmen in what was probably the last sustained trench warfare that will ever be seen. In addition; it includes articles and documents from the era of the Korean War; from both the enemy and United Nations sides; that give a historical view of the events that shaped the war. Also included are stories of actual combat on the front lines at the Marine company level; especially recounting the “Battle of the Nevada Cities.†A saga of the life of a young Corpsman gives the reader an understanding of how a man becomes a Navy Corpsman and his insertion into the chaos of war and the courage he developed. It gives the convoluted and narrow picture from the eyes of a combatant to a broader; historical picture of the war.

Jimmy Angel is an obscure historical figure and Canaima Tepui is a remote place. Unlike Abe Lincoln or Rome;Italy there not enough material for a long book with deep prose. This aside; I think the comic book format helps the reader visualize a landscape not frequented by the press or tourist promotions. I had the chance to visit the region in the 1990's and can attest the images are an accurate depiction of the landscape. I read the book in two lunch breaks so it is a good read for people with limmited time on there hands. Happy Reading.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
