Authentic; fascinatingBy SusanIn this rare; intact collection of Civil War letters to the home front in Vermont; Proctor Swallow gives a new level of detail and insight into daily life in America during war time. Unlike fictionalized narratives in which the protagonist's life ends up "neatly"; these real letters show Mr. Swallow's frustration and "failure to thrive" after the war; side effects of war not often fully acknowledged. Ms. Spalding did an excellent job of providing historical contexts for each letter while allowing the true voice of the writer to come through in authentic ways.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Great Read......By Jennifer McConnellSpalding did a fabulous job letting Proctor Swallow speak for himself. He was funny; annoying; informative; prejudice; sarcastic; yet lovable. I couldn't wait to read his next letter to find out if he prevailed. The author successfully blended historical fact with a primary source to tell the story of the 7th Vermont. What an interesting story....when will the film be released?
