You almost expect an Upstairs Downstairs type of story but it is nothing like it. This book gave a great measure of humanity to the Presidents it covers and their First Ladies showing just how influential the Ladies were. Highly reccommended0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating biographiesBy JayhusketteThis book focuses on the first ladies who were in The White House from President Roosevelt's tenure in the 1940s to President Nixon in the late 60s and early 70s. J. B. West; Chief Usher at the White House for most of this time; pictures of the essence and style of each of these fFrst Ladies and combines interesting with historical information about the People's House. We get to know Mr. West as well. This is a fascinating but behind the scenes at the White House and I recommend it to anyone interested in history; biographies; and well written memoirs.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. funny and curious stories about the familiesBy Jennifer PMr. West really gives a considered and very interesting peek behind the scenes at some of our most captivating First Families. He is respectful; which I appreciate; but you won't find much dirt here. He is not a gossip monger. To move out; move in and then adapt to the lifestyles and personalities of each of the First Ladies; literally overnight (or in the time it takes for the Oath of Office; actually) is a feat of professionalism and personal fortitude one has to admire! He tells many; many fascinating; funny and curious stories about the families; but also about the history of the iconic White House itself and its operations. No one will read this book and not come away with absolute appreciation for the well-oiled machine that makes the First Family and our nation's diplomatic efforts look flawless. Very happy I read Mr. West's wonderful book.
