Frederic W. Gleach offers the most balanced and complete accounting of the early years of the Jamestown colony to date. When English colonists established their first permanent settlement at Jamestown in 1607; they confronted a powerful and growing Native chiefdom consisting of over thirty tribes under one paramount chief; Powhatan. For the next half-century; a portion of the Middle Atlantic coastal plain became a charged and often violent meeting ground between two very different worlds.

Stamina; courage and brains sustained Martha Summerhayes on the frontier in the 1870s.By Jean P.Well-written; vivid first-hand account by a young Army wife of life in the West in the 1870s with few of the comforts of home. Where her husband was sent was home to her. This is a tribute to the courage and stamina of Martha Summerhayes who was determined to make the best of and even improve on her Army post surroundings while raising a young son. Excellent book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Timeless ClassicBy kurtisvWonderfully written with honest and vivid descriptions of late 19th century life of an US Army wife. Even if this historical topic does not appeal to you the quality of the composition will draw you in. I understand there are several editions of this available but I found this to be well edited and augmented nicely with relevant photographs0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
