Through a study of Sikh extremism in the Punjab; the author argues that ethnic identities are not fixed and permanent; but are dynamic and need to be sociologically contextualized in order to be properly understood.

The author takes the reader through the steps leading up the American Civil War with the MexicanWar of 1846.He shows that this war is a dress rehearsal for the conflict of 1861. Great book worth the price.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Superb renderingBy Robert JohnstonThis Oxford History series has turned out to be one of the finest American history reads published. 'What Hath God Wrought' documents and Howe superbly narrates one of the least generally understood but significant periods in US history. In between the War of 1812 and just before the Civil War is the complex story of creating the transcontinental nation.I'm late to the reading and review. Other history readers have done an excellent job rendering 5-star reviews. I confirm their opinions ... this is a big and thoroughly enjoyable read.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding powerhouse of a book!By DaveWWhile I certainly cannot write an in-depth and insightful review and many others here have; I can say with full confidence that this book was an outstanding powerhouse of research made infinitely readable. I learned a surprisingly large about this somewhat neglected time in history that truly helps me see the connections occurring later in US history. What was most surprising was the depth of religious movements taking place throughout this period of time. As a former Mormon I knew this time was when the religion started; I had no idea how this was but one of many hundreds of movements taking place. Moreover; the belief that the second coming of Christ was either beginning or near its end explains so much and helps answer many questions that have lingered for many years. Thank you Mr. Howe for the excellent journey thru time that you have provided me. I see why this book was given the Pulitzer prize and believe it to be fully deserving.
