What we don't know at the outset is that he and his family were directly affected by all the events and personalities of the persecution and deportation of Jews during WW2: His personal and family stories dramatically and graphically re-create that era; and bring back to life the personalities; both large and small. It's a great book; with many compelling stories; especially for someone interested in this period of history.
