When God Looked the Other Way: An Odyssey of War; Exile; and Redemption

audiobook When God Looked the Other Way: An Odyssey of War; Exile; and Redemption by Wesley Adamczyk in History

Description

At the Valois "See Your Food" cafeteria on Chicago's South Side; black and white men gather over cups of coffee and steam-table food. Mitchell Duneier; a sociologist; spent four years at the Valois writing this moving profile of the black men who congregate at "Slim's Table." Praised as "a marvelous study of those who should not be forgotten" by the Wall Street Journal;Slim's Table helps demolish the narrow sociological picture of black men and simple media-reinforced stereotypes. In between is a "respectable" citizenry; too often ignored and little understood."Slim's Table is an astonishment. Duneier manages to fling open windows of perception into what it means to be working-class black; how a caring community can proceed from the most ordinary transactions; all the while smashing media-induced stereotypes of the races and race relations."—Citation for Chicago Sun Times Chicago Book of the Year Award"An instant classic of ethnography that will provoke debate and provide insight for years to come."—Michael Eric Dyson; Chicago Tribune"Mr. Duneier sees the subjects of his study as people and he sees the scale of their lives as fully human; rather than as diminished versions of grander lives lived elsewhere by people of another color. . . . A welcome antidote to trends in both journalism and sociology."—Roger Wilkins; New York Times Book Review

While I am not usually a fan of historical books; this book; having been told like a story; captivated me. Utterly. The story we read about here is one that is generally untold; or perhaps forgotten. The Polish suffering of WWII is often only considered from the viewpoint of the tragedies bestowed upon them by Hitler. This story allows us to see the role that Poland's other "neighbor"; Russia; played in the demise of a country and a people. This is an incredible look at a horrific story; and one that was repeated over and over again. Lest history be repeated; it's important to understand....and to then never forget. I learned so much from this book and the author opened my eyes to a part of history that I largely misunderstood in the past. Highly; highly recommend. Will definitely be a keeper and a book that is reread.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. WHEN GOD LOOKED THE OTHER WAYBy Jean KI grew up in Chicago; child of Polish immigrants from the early 1900s; and never heard of this story or what happened to my people during WWII. The book was recommended by my son who borrowed this book from a recent Polish immigrant and luckily had it. the book was well written and dealt with a subject I knew nothing about. I went to a Polish Catholic high school but still knew nothing about this. The book speaks of the strength and resilience of the Polish people and the value put upon family and extended family; and what happened during WWII to the Poles sent to Siberia and all the corruption allowed by the US and Britain. Names are named and situations are described. I never knew why my uncle; a German married to a Pole; would not tolerate Polish jokes. After reading this book; I now know. The Polish are a strong; loyal people who deserve better. I highly recommend this book to anyone; especially those interested in WWII.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very informative about the suffering of the Polish people in WW2.By SandyI have read many books about the holocaust against the Jewish people;absolutely horrific. What hasn't been written or spoken much has been the treatment against the poles. Both Germany and Russia committed atrocities towards the poles. Poland was surrounded by enemies on all sides. Two very evil regimes. There were trials for the nazies;but Russia was never held accountable. This book was very informative about brutality many poles went through;told by a person who survived but lost many loved ones. I will be looking for more books about Poland..
