A gender-critical consideration of women and religion in Chinese traditions from medieval to modern times.Gendering Chinese Religion marks the emergence of a subfield on women; gender; and religion in China studies. Ranging from the medieval period to the present day; this volume departs from the conventional and often male-centered categorization of Chinese religions into Confucianism; Buddhism; Daoism; and popular religion. It makes two compelling arguments. First; Chinese women have deployed specific religious ideas and rituals to empower themselves in various social contexts. Second; gendered perceptions and representations of Chinese religions have been indispensable to the historical and contemporary construction of social and political power. The contributors use innovative ways of discovering and applying a rich variety of sources; many previously ignored by scholars. While each of the chapters in this interdisciplinary work represents a distinct perspective; together they form a coherent dialogue about the historical importance; intellectual possibilities; and methodological protocols of this new subfield.

Incredibly Informative and Packed with Gospel TruthsBy Jason SmithReeves and Chester do a masterful job of explaining the basics of what sparked the Protestant Reformation and why these issues still matter today. They write in a highly readable style that does not require any previous knowledge of the historical situation to understand. They explain why it's both simplistic and naive to assume that the issues surrounding the Reformation have long been settled. In reality; these issues are still alive and well and deeply divide Protestantism from Roman Catholicism. The issues matter; the authors argue; because they are about nothing less than how we can have confidence and assurance that we are right with a holy God. I found it to be incredibly informative and packed with much needed gospel truths. My hope is that both Catholics and evangelicals will read this book so as to understand the issues that brought about the Reformation and why it still matters to us today.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great readBy Catts FamilyA great treatise on why even in our modern culture the voices from the reformation speak to us today. The heart of man continues to wander away from salvation by grace; through faith. We still inherently believe in our own ability to save ourselves from our sin nature. This book calls us back to the core theology expressed by the reformers.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
