Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China

PDF Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang in History

Description

As the day for Lincoln's second inauguration drew near; Americans wondered what their sixteenth president would say about the Civil War. Would Lincoln guide the nation toward “Reconstruction”? What about the slaves? They had been emancipated; but what about the matter of suffrage? When Lincoln finally stood before his fellow countrymen on March 4; 1865; and had only 703 words to share; the American public was stunned. The President had not offered the North a victory speech; nor did he excoriate the South for the sin of slavery. Instead; he called the whole country guilty of the sin and pleaded for reconciliation and unity. In this compelling account; noted historian Ronald C. White Jr. shows how Lincoln's speech was initially greeted with confusion and hostility by many in the Union; commended by the legions of African Americans in attendance; abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass among them; and ultimately appropriated by his assassin John Wilkes Booth forty-one days later. Filled with all the facts and factors surrounding the Second Inaugural; Lincoln's Greatest Speech is both an important historical document and a thoughtful analysis of Lincoln's moral and rhetorical genius.

The story is mainly about the Mother of the writer and it gives you a first hand look for what the Chinese had to endure during the time of the great famine. The conditions and mistreatment of the innocent was far worse than I could imagine. I enjoyed the historical part of the book and learning more of their culture. There were places the book seemed to drag but mostly it moved along at a nice pace.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very Worthwhile Eye OpeningBy Dick WhittingtonSpanning three generations of women in a single family; this is the inside story of their lives during during the 30 years of the Mao regime. This book opened my eyes to the realities of The Cultural Revolution. Strengths of this book included the writing; character development; first-person storytelling and details of life; thought; actions reactions; experiences; etc. included. This was not a short or quick read...but it was interesting; involving and thought provoking. I lived these years and never knew...before; during or after. It's a book I am very glad I read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Fascinating Untold Story of China - Read Before You Go!!By GingerAmazing history of China!!! I had no idea the horribleness of Mao; the starvation; mind-control; lack of education; terrible treatment; torture; etc. going on in the 70's; especially; when I was living a wonderful/carefree life in the US. Incredible/detailed writing. I couldn't hardly put it down!! Some parts were so depressing but fascinating. I spent 17 wonderful days touring China last fall and wish I'd read this before I'd gone so I could have asked questions of our guide. I'd also have had a greater appreciation for the suffering the Chinese have endured. I can't believe they still have Mao's huge picture on the front of the Forbidden City! That would be like having a picture of Hitler in Germany. I do NOT understand how you could revere such a horrible man; and his wife sounded even more evil. It is frightening to read of the past and how the control of people's lives and minds begins; in light of our country and the direction some would like to take us. This would be a good example of: "Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it."
