Awakening: An Introduction to the History of Eastern Thought engages students with anecdotes; primary and secondary sources; an accessible writing style; and a clear historical approach. The text focuses on India; China; and Japan; while showing the relationships that exist between Eastern and Western traditions. Patrick Bresnan consistently links the past to the present; so students may see that Eastern traditions; however ancient their origins; are living traditions and relevant to modern times.

A family's story becomes a nation's storyBy Bart MillsFinding troves of moldering wartime letters inspired Thomas Childers to re-create the experience of an American bomber crew shot down over Germany in the waning days of World War II. Some survivors of similar experiences have written what they remembered; but few non-fiction accounts of the air war achieve the wide yet detailed picture drawn in "Wings of Morning." An uncle of the author was one of the doomed plane's crewmen; adding a personal reason for Childers to strive to get it right. From stateside preparations to the final minutes of the plane's last flight; Childers has a primary source. He even went to Germany; not just to look up old records; but to find bits of the crashed aircraft. The fact-heavy narrative sometimes drags; but no one who picks up the book will fail to read on; if only to find out if any survive the flak attack over Regensburg.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Life of the Last B-24 Crew to be Shot Down in WWIIBy Linda33707I was glued to this book for a couple days. It was very well written and held my interest; even with the immense detail it relates. The author; Thomas Childers; gives us plenty of personal insight (gleaned from hundreds of personal letters home) blended with factual details. These are provided through the eyes of Howard Goodner as he decides to join the USAAF. leaves his family and his love; and trains for flight crew. Later; based in England in 1944 and 45; some of the missions of his B-24 Liberator crew are described in perfect detail. It seemed I was there too. The story of Howard and each of his crew is revealed; and it is gripping. I would say that a predisposition to the details of our role in WWII is helpful; because Childers gives us a big dose of the realism of that time; at home and over the German targets. 8th Air Force operations; down to squadron and crew; are woven into this story; along with some highly interesting and touching research findings after the war. There is no fiction in the book; and none is needed. You'll see.
