Another of Eric Brown's classic in a great formatBy Flying PhotographerEric Brown's books are classics; in that he was not only witness but an active participant in the most interesting and fast-changing time in aviation history; spanning from the late 30s into the 50s; that is form the fabric-covered biplanes to the supersonic jets. Being a test pilot; he was privileged in flying so many different airplanes that he was in a unique position to judge their flying characteristics and compare them. This book covers non-Luftwaffe airplanes; with a chapter of varying length dedicated at each model. Don't expect a history of the type; be it development or operational; as Captain Brown goes straight to the point of "test-flying" the respective aircraft model for the benefit of the reader. Accordingly; for example you will get to know at which particular speed the Spiteful's laminar flow wing stalled; into which direction it dropped when stalling; etc. While this may not be very interesting information to some; it does give a very good insight into the flying behavior of these many very different aircraft types that are long gone; and as such is an invaluable historic record. The book is very nicely printed in glossy big format paper; with lots of good quality BW and color pictures; as well as some nice drawings and profiles; and thus makes for an ideal collection volume.Overall; as with other of Captain Brown's books; this book is pure history told by someone who was in the cockpit; and as such represents an invaluable record of a long-gone era of aviation. Add the very nice production; and you have a true classic in your hands - highly recommended.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Other reviewers did a great job of highlighting what is in the bookBy Non PCOther reviewers did a great job of highlighting what is in the book. My only comment would be to emphasize that it is written in the viewpoint of an Engineering Test Pilot. As such; he discusses the airfoils; handling; max performance specs; engine specs; hydraulic boost systems; etc -- instead of getting into the "color" of an airplane.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
