Really enjoyed the various stories.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A nice little book.By AtheenFor the price this is a nice little book. It's about a sixth to eighth grade reading level; in fact interested fourth grade readers would find it fully accessible. The author keeps her own editorials to a minimum and lets the documents speak for themselves. I think in this situation this shows a remarkable restraint. The content is nearly all drawn from firsthand accounts of those participating in the events described. Diaries; letters; and post-war autobiographies provide most of the material; so the reader has more of a sense of "being there." Two of those quoted are probably well known to those who enjoy classic fiction; Harriet Beecher Stowe; author of Uncle Tom's Cabin (Thrift Edition); and Louisa May Alcott; author of Little Women (Unabridged Classics) and other books.Unlike some books on the subject; both sides of the Civil War conflict are quoted; giving the reader a better perspective on the emotions; central issues; and complaints of both sides. As one of my own teachers once said; "You can't have a really good fight unless both sides are at least a little bit right and a little bit wrong." The passionate documentation of these "wrongs" and "rights" make it clear why the war lasted as long as it did and was as bloody as it was.A nice little book.
