Women; the State and Revolution: Soviet Family Policy and Social Life; 1917-1936 (Cambridge Russian; Soviet and Post-Soviet Studies)

audiobook Women; the State and Revolution: Soviet Family Policy and Social Life; 1917-1936 (Cambridge Russian; Soviet and Post-Soviet Studies) by Wendy Z. Goldman in History

Description

Between 1934 and 1941 Stalin unleashed what came to be known as "The Great Terror" against millions of Soviet citizens. This book is a study of how ordinary Russians experienced life during this period. Sarah Davies' study uses NKVD and Party reports; letters and other evidence to show that; despite propaganda and repression; the people continued to criticize Stalin and the Soviet regime; and complain about particular policies. This book sheds light on a hugely important part of Russia's social; political and cultural history.

Two thumbs up!By A CustomerThe book provided an excellent insight as to the troubles facing women; children and families following he Bolshevik revolution. The book is relevant for anyone studying gender issues in the early 20th century as well as those interested in Russian history. The book is extremely easy to read; however; it does at times get bogged down in overuse of statistical data. The data fully supports the author's conclusions; but at times the smooth flow of the book is interrupted by too many examples. Overall; the book was extremely easy to read and provided good historical and analytical coverage of the problems facing women; children and families in post-revolutionary Russia.
