My only complaint is that; for me it ended abruptly; I wanted more. I am no fan of the ultra orthodox; but the author had me captivated from the beginning; his stories were captivating and his struggle heart rending. The world that he lived in; Hitler did destroy; so the richness of their pasts; have left; small traces behind. It is a page turner; but also; a mind expander. Thank you for this gift of knowledge.7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A very interesting memoir of life in hasidic Hungary and in in the holocaustBy DannySofAnnArborThis memoir spans early childhood memories through young adulthood and moves back and forth between a childhood in small town Hungary as a hasidic Jew and the experience of deportation and survival in Auschwitz through to liberation. It is suffused with the relgious memes of the ultra orthodox but also with astute social and moral impressions that are universal in character. The author regularly reports dreams; usually of forboding. While he does not put forward an agenda relating to the orthodox view of the holocaust it is there implicitly. He recognizes the challenge to faith engendered by the experience but also keeps reverting to religious memes for succor. One of the most touching passages of the book is his encounter with Yeno (Chapter 26). I don't want to give away the story. But the writing is lyrical and dreamy.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. wonderful storyBy Kindle CustomerYou read a story about the Holocaust; and the stories of human suffering and the horrible things we as humans can do to each other. It's awful; but these stories require us to listen; to learn; and to not forget. While at times this story has horrible moments; I enjoyed the attention the author gave to the memories of growing up as a Jew before and durning ww2; as well as his personal experiences of despair and hope. I did not want this story to end. My thanks to the author for sharing.
